2017 Guest Instructors!
We are pleased to welcome four gifted musicians from the Lower 48: Michelle Alany, Janie Cowan, George Jackson, and Rachel Baiman
Michelle Alany is a violinist and singer specializing in global acoustic music. She delivers soulful interpretations of traditional and original Sephardic (Judeo-Spanish), Balkan, and Israeli songs infused with American blues. Michelle has performed with the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, played in world music ensembles, and brought the sounds of Texas to jazz and blues clubs in Europe. She works with musicians and recording engineers in Austin and New York, has recorded with her band Nefesh, and is finishing her first solo album.

Rachel Baiman is a singer, songwriter, composer, and banjo/fiddle player based in Nashville. She is a two-time Illinois State Fiddle Champion, a winner of the Old Town School of Folk Music's Midwestern Fiddle Championships, has delved into southern country-bluegrass, and studied Scottish music traditions in Edinburgh. Rachel plays in the duo 10 String Symphony, and in several other bands. She has recorded CDs and has toured in the US, as well as in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.

Janie Cowan was born and raised in Anchorage. She is a bassist educated at The Oberlin Conservatory of Music, and has studied with numerous jazz, rock, world, and classical music luminaries. In New York City Janie found a hub of globally minded musicians in the Go:Organic Orchestra, a world music ensemble. After recording on two albums with the project, she helped expand the orchestra to Austin, TX, where she currently lives and plays. Janie tours nationally and internationally.
George Jackson hails from New Zealand, has lived in Australia, and now resides in Nashville. He is a 7th generation fiddler, and his passion for music is inspired by the contrasting styles of bluegrass, old-time, and Celtic. He's been awarded the Golden Fiddle Award for "Best Fiddler", The Australian Youth Bluegrass Scholarship, has won the CMAA Australian Fiddle and Banjo Championships, and the Rockygrass Banjo Competition. George has performed throughout Australia with his bands The Company, and One Up, Two Down, as well as touring with the Peter Rowan Trio.
